Etymology

Etymology (/ˌɛtɪˈmɒlədʒi/ ET-im-OL-ə-jee)1 is the study of the history of the form of words2 and, by extension, the origin and evolution of their semantic meaning across time.3 It is a subfield of historical linguistics, and draws upon comparative semantics, morphology, semiotics, and phonetics.
